Sworn's DKP system
These are the loot rules we will be using for Wrath of the Lich King. They are almost exactly the same as the previous version we used in Burning Crusade. The one amendment has been highlighted in yellow.
The reason we're all in Sworn and raiding is because it's fun. There's no greater joy in WoW than downing a particularly tricky boss after dozens of failed attempts. One of the side effects of raiding (if we do it well) is loot rewards. It's very important to us that these rewards are distributed fairly between the members of Sworn. Your ability to claim loot should be based on your attendance and the effort you put in to killing the bosses. We think we've come up with the fairest system possible for doing that. We certainly did not steal this from another website. >.>
We will be using a zero-sum DKP system. What this means is that if you add up everyone's current DKP standing, everything should add up to zero. This obviously means that some people will have a positive DKP score, and some will have a negative value. What's important to remember is that having a negative score is not a bad thing. It's not important in this system whether you have a positive or negative score, there is no debt, all that matters is the difference in points between you and anyone else who rolls on an item.
Think of the system as a queue: the more you attend raids, and the more you see bosses die, the further forward you move in the queue. The people at the front of the queue will get loot before those behind them.
On to the specifics. Apologies if it gets a little complicated. It's actually fairly straightforwards, any difficulties will be due to my inability to communicate the system.
Brief Explanation
Every point that's added into the system needs to be taken out elsewhere, and vice versa. Say Dagger of Pwnage drops, worth 50dkp. As a melee DPS drop, all rogues, DPS warriors and melee shamans are invited to roll for the dagger. LeetShammy has 12 points, ImbaRogue has 17, and both roll for the item. Since ImbaRogue has more points, he wins the dagger (the result of the roll only matters if 2 people share the same number of points). ImbaRogue gets the dagger, and 50 points are taken off his total (putting him on -33). These 50 points are then divided equally and added to the total points of everyone at the raid. So in a 25 man raid, everyone would gain 2 points (including ImbaRogue).
Earning Points
There are 2 ways you can earn points in this system:
Loot drops: Every item that can drop in the 25man raid instances has been assigned a point value. These values have been assigned to reflect the quality of the item: if Pauldrons of Purple give a bigger stats boost than Gloves of OMGWTFBBQ, the pauldrons will cost more points. Every time an item is bought by someone in the raid group, the points they spend will be divided equally between everyone in the raid group and added to their total.
Attendance: There will be times when we will do a raid that won't result in loot drops. New bosses can take days of raids to master. We need to reward those that attend these days of attempts, and make sure others can't skip all the attempt days, turn up when the boss is on farm, and then grab all the loot (not that anyone in Sworn would do that. And you certainly wouldn't remain in Sworn very long if you did).
On raids where the bosses we are attempting are not on farm status (ie, killed regularly without much risk), everyone who attends will be awarded 1 point. To keep the system zeroed, these points are then totaled up (usually to 25) and then divided by the total number of members of Sworn. This value is then subtracted from every member of Sworn, whether you were at the raid or not. Remember: your actual point value doesn't matter, having this value subtracted makes absolutely no difference to your point standing. Since an equal value was subtracted from everyone, nobody's position in the loot queue has changed. All we've done is normalise the system so everything still totals zero.
Other things to note
- Raid attendance for the attendance points will be taken at the start of the first boss attempt. This means you should be online and in the raid group at this time. Being late could mean you miss out on your points.
- Raid attendance will be taken again after every boss kill. This is so we know who was present at the kill, and so eligible for a share of the loot points.
- All point values will be to 2 decimal places. Rounding adjustments will be recorded and fed back into the system (this is a bit mathsy, you don't need to worry about this).
- Loot eligibility. When an item drops and is opened for rolling, the master looter will announce the classes/specs that are eligible to roll for the item. Only the rolls of people in these classes/specs will be considered. If none of them need, the roll will open up to others.
- New members. New members to Sworn will start on 0 points. This will put them in the middle of the table, behind everyone who's been earning points without spending, and ahead of those who've been recently rewarded. New members are not eligible to roll while on trial (usually 3 raids) unless no full members need a given item drop, but will still earn points during this time.
- Alts. As a general rule, we don't allow you to bring an alt to a raid. However, there may be occasions where we ask you to bring an alt to fill a raid position we lack, or we may allow alts to come along to “farm” raids at some later time. The points awarded are per player, not per character, so you will still earn the same amount of points you would on your main. However, looting priorities will still be for those on their main character. You would only be eligible to buy an item for your alt if no main characters need it.
- To summarise priorities, the order is: Full Sworn members (Knights and Reserves) > Trials > Alts > sharded.
- Each tier of raiding will have separate DKP lists. DKP earned in one tier cannot be carried over to another tier. The idea is to reward people for their efforts in a given dungeon, and not to encourage the hoarding of points to get an advantage later on.
And I think that covers everything. It's not as complicated as it all sounds, once we get going with it, it should become pretty clear. All you should do is note how many points you have going into a raid, and know that if you have more points than someone else, you get priority on loot.
One final note: The Sworn Council reserves the right to intervene in extreme circumstances and to distribute loot as they see fit. Hopefully it won't happen, the system is designed to be fair and award everyone who attends equally. But there may be a time where we feel the raid group as a whole would benefit more if person A took a loot drop over person B, regardless of point totals (person A would still be charged for the drop, of course). The only reason to collect good loot is to advance the raid group as a whole to higher tier raids, so that we can see the rest of the game's content. Progress makes us all happy, and if reassigning an epic one week could make a real difference to this, we will do so. Like I say, it hopefully won't be necessary, but if it is, it will be in the interest of Sworn that we do so.
Addendums
Epic recipes
There are several plans and patterns that drop in some of the raid instances. These will be /rolled for and distributed according to the following rules:
- The priority order of all loot drops is maintained (ie, Knights + reserves > trials > alts).
-Secondary to this, priority goes to those crafters who already meet the required skill level to make the item.
- In the case where the crafted item is Bind on Equip, all specs and classes have equal priority.
- In the case where the crafted item is Bind on Pickup, priority will go to the class/spec that can make use of the crafted item. This overrides all other priorities.
Due to the effort involved in crafting this gear, patterns are exempt from the DKP system. DKP will not determine who gets the pattern, nor will the patterns cost any DKP.
Off-spec items
If an item is not useful for anyone's main spec (ie, all people who's primary role and spec would make use of the item), that item can be rolled for as an "off-spec" item and paid for with gold. The price will be the equivalent DKP value of the item. The winner of the item is determined solely by the value rolled. This should reduce the amount of loot that gets sharded, and improve everyone's abilities at filling other roles when needed, without adversely affecting anyone's DKP total.
Epic Gem Distribution
This is a very similar system to the DKP system we use for all our epics, with a few differences. Firstly, there is only 1 item: "Gem". We won't be tracking what gems you've had or what you did with them, we don't care. A Gem will cost 25 gem points (GP). This will be divided between all players on the raid (including the person who bought the gem) and will be added to your total.
The system is tracked in a database (using EQDKP), but is entirely separate from our main loot system. Spending GP on gems doesn't affect your DKP for loot, and vice versa.
So, in essence: you pay 25 GP for a gem. You gain 1 GP for every gem that drops (and is taken by someone, including yourself) on a raid. There is no sort of debt, the system is like a queue and only your relative position compared to other rollers matters.
PS, you may note that the system isn't zero summed because of the adjustments applied to the system when we started it, which was after we started getting gem drops. I could zero it, but that would mean everyone would have a fraction in their total rather than an integer, which is messy. Instead, the system will forever be "-54 summed". This really doesn't affect anything. |

While the loot rules remain the same for Wrath of the Lich King, we've made a change to the pricing system we use for the items. Item costs are now all based on the slot which they occupy. So all belts will cost the same amount of points, regardless of their type.
The point values are listed below, followed by a brief explanation of our reasoning.
Tier tokens
Gloves: 30
Shoulders: 33
Legs: 35
Head: 37
Chest: 40
Non-tier armour
Bracers: 18
Belts: 18
Gloves: 20
Boots: 20
Shoulders: 23
Legs: 25
Head: 25
Chest: 28
Cloak: 22
Other slots
Neck: 20
Rings: 20
Trinkets: 20
Off-hands (inc off-hand only weapons): 15
Shields: 20
Wands: 20
Relics/Librams/Totems/Thrown: 15
Weapons
Main/one hand: 32
Two-handers (inc staves): 37
Ranged: 25
We decided on this method of pricing to ensure that, as far as possible, everyone was paying a fair price for their equipment. Judging the worth of cloth caster gear against plate tank gear is pretty much impossible, so it also simplifies the system a little too.
Tier tokens are considerably more expensive than their non-tier equivalents. This is to encourage people to invest in non-tier loot, and to make people think about the worth of their next tier upgrade, rather than just grab it "because it's a tier item". It also ensures that when people do get a tier token, they move much further down the queue for the next one, making the spread of tier items more even across the raid group. Finally, it makes killing a tier token dropping boss more rewarding to kill, who are often the more challenging bosses.
We don't expect the prices to change much between tiers. So a one-handed weapon will cost 32 DKP in both T7 and T8. Since the DKP lists for tiers is kept separate, this won't cause a problem: it's like paying $25 for T7 and £25 for T8. It's the same number, but the pounds are worth more than the dollars. |
